Action Button Productivity Uses on iPhone: What to Assign

Quick Answer

The iPhone Action button runs one function when you press and hold it, and Apple's iPhone User Guide lists 12 to choose from in Settings > Action Button. For productivity, the most useful assignments are a Focus, Voice Memo, a control such as Timer, or a single shortcut that opens a Choose from Menu list, so one button can start several routines.

What does the Action button do on iPhone?

The Action button is a programmable side button that performs one function you pick, such as Silent Mode, a Focus, the camera or a shortcut. Apple's iPhone User Guide describes it plainly: "On supported models, iPhone has an Action button in place of the Ring/Silent switch." It first appeared on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and every iPhone 16 model has one. If your iPhone has a small button above the volume buttons where the switch used to be, it is an Action button.

One detail matters before you assign anything. Per Apple, "To perform the action assigned to the Action button, press and hold the Action button." It is a press and hold, not a tap, which makes accidental presses in a pocket less likely and suits actions you take several times a day. Silent Mode is the default; the productivity value comes from replacing it.

How do you change what the Action button does?

You change it in the Settings app, not in Control Center. These are the steps from Apple's iPhone User Guide, with the one trap that makes people think the button is broken:

  1. 1

Open the Settings app and tap Action Button.

  2. 2

Swipe through the icons beside the image of your iPhone until the action you want is named below the dots.

  3. 3

If the action has extra options, tap the button that appears below it and choose one.

  4. 4

For Controls, Shortcut and Accessibility, you must pick a specific option. Apple notes that otherwise "the Action button does nothing."

  5. 5

Leave Settings. Press and hold the Action button to check the new assignment.

Built-in Action button functions

Apple's iPhone User Guide lists Silent Mode, Focus, Camera, Visual Intelligence, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Recognize Music, Translate, Magnifier, Controls, Shortcut and Accessibility, plus No Action. Visual Intelligence requires Apple Intelligence, which Apple says is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models or later.

Can the Action button switch your Lock Screen and notes?

Yes, indirectly: assign a Focus to the Action button, then link that Focus to its own Lock Screen. In Settings > Focus, Apple lets you "choose a customized Lock Screen or Home Screen page to switch to while the Focus is on." One press and hold then silences the apps you filtered out and swaps in a Lock Screen built for that context, such as a Work Lock Screen with a Calendar widget and a Reminders widget. Our Focus mode setups for iPhone cover which apps to allow in each Focus.

If what you want on that Lock Screen is your own text, such as today's three priorities, NoteWall (an iPhone app we make) renders the notes you type into your wallpaper. The wallpaper is applied by an Apple Shortcut named "Set NoteWall Wallpaper", and many people find that Shortcut step the fiddliest part of setup. After editing a note, the Update Wallpaper button in the app opens the Shortcut for you, which the NoteWall FAQ puts at about 5 seconds. A practical Action button pairing is Shortcut > Open App > NoteWall, so one press takes you to the editor. A subscription is required, and the App Store shows the terms before you pay. Our guide to putting notes on your iPhone Lock Screen compares this with widget-based options, and if the Shortcut runs but nothing changes, see why a Shortcut stops changing the Lock Screen wallpaper.

Which built-in actions are most useful for productivity?

The best built-in choice is the one you would otherwise dig for several times a day. Four of Apple's 12 options fit most work routines without building anything:

  • •

Focus. Apple describes it as a way to "turn on a Focus to silence notifications and filter out distractions." Pick one Focus, such as Work or Do Not Disturb; like Silent Mode, it works as an on/off toggle. Combined with a linked Lock Screen (above), it is the strongest single assignment.

  • •

Voice Memo. Starts a recording for an idea, a meeting note or a to-do you will type up later. Useful when your hands are full and you do not want to unlock and find an app.

  • •

Controls. Runs any one control from the controls gallery, such as Timer, Calculator or a third-party app's control. Apple's What's new in iOS 18 page notes the gallery includes "controls from your favorite apps."

  • •

Translate. For anyone who travels or works across languages, it opens translation for a phrase or a conversation.

Tip: Camera and Flashlight are already one swipe or one press away on the Lock Screen, so assigning them to the Action button duplicates something you have. Spend the button on an action that has no shortcut yet.

How do you make one Action button do several things?

Assign a single shortcut that asks what you want. The Action button can only hold one assignment, but the Shortcuts app's Choose from Menu action turns that one assignment into a short list, so a single press and hold can start any of several routines. This is the setup most productivity guides mean by "multiple actions", and it uses only Apple's own apps.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app, tap + to create a shortcut, and name it something like "Action Menu".

  2. Add the Choose from Menu action and type three options, for example Start Work Focus, New Reminder and Start 25-Minute Timer.

  3. Under each option add the matching action: Set Focus, Add New Reminder or Start Timer.

  4. In Settings > Action Button, choose Shortcut, tap the button below it, and select your new shortcut.

To make the button behave differently by time of day, wrap the menu in an If action that compares the Current Date with a time, for example showing work options before 6 PM and personal ones after. Start with a two-option menu you will actually use; a long menu is slower than opening the app. For more shortcut patterns, see our iPhone Shortcuts automation tips.

What should you avoid when setting up the Action button?

Most Action button frustration comes from three avoidable setups. Each one is fixed in Settings > Action Button in under a minute:

  • •

Choosing Shortcut, Controls or Accessibility without picking an option. Apple is explicit that the button then does nothing. Open Settings > Action Button and tap the button below the action to choose one.

  • •

Assigning a long multi-step shortcut you have not run by hand. Run it once from the Shortcuts app first, so any permission prompts appear while you are paying attention.

  • •

Forgetting where Silent Mode went. Once you reassign the Action button, Apple's guide says that on models with an Action button you open Control Center and tap the bell to turn Silent mode on or off.

Action button FAQ

Which iPhones have the Action button? It replaced the Ring/Silent switch starting with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and every iPhone 16 model has one. Apple's guide refers to them as "supported models"; if your iPhone still has a Ring/Silent switch, it has no Action button.

Can the Action button run more than one action? It holds one assignment. To get several, assign a shortcut that uses Choose from Menu, as described above.

Can the Action button turn on a Focus? Yes. Focus is one of Apple's built-in choices. Choose it in Settings > Action Button, then pick which Focus it controls.

Does NoteWall work with the Action button? NoteWall has no Action button feature of its own. You can assign Shortcut > Open App > NoteWall to open the app quickly, then tap Update Wallpaper after editing your notes. NoteWall requires a subscription and is on the App Store as "Lock Screen Notes: NoteWall"; as of October 13, 2026 the US listing shows version 2.4.1 and 4.4 out of 5 from 109 ratings.

Put Your Own Notes on the Lock Screen

Want your own notes as plain text on the lock screen? NoteWall renders the notes you type into your wallpaper, applied through the "Set NoteWall Wallpaper" Shortcut. A subscription is required; the App Store shows terms before you pay.
